‘Spellbinding and unsettling’ is how I can best describe this month’s Classic Movie at the Mill. I think I said of a previous film “Miss this at your peril” Well, this time it could be more of a “See this at your peril.”
The Night of the Hunter was the only film that English actor Charles Laughton ever directed. On its release in 1955 it was both a critical and commercial failure. Over the years, this movie, initially regarded as a disastrous directorial debut, first achieved cult status before finally being reassessed as the masterpiece it truly is.
Starring Robert Mitchum in a role every bit as chilling as that in his later film Cape Fear, Shelley Winters and former silent screen actress Lillian Gish, this movie is a beautifully shot marriage of nightmare and fairy tale, once seen never forgotten.
The date is Friday 30th August. Cancel any previous engagements and book early if you’d like to attend. These evenings are usually a sell-out. £12 for non-members of the OSM and £10 for members. Please ring the Old Saw Mill on 01260 277658 if you’d like to come. Doors will open at 5.30 pm. The excellent pie, peas and mashed potatoes supper is served at 6.00 pm followed by my introduction to the film and then the showing of the movie.
Hope to see you there!
