It’s an accepted fact these days that a large proportion of us are getting way heavier than we should be. If like me you’re over 70 you can remember people being much slighter, but why oh, why?

We are what we eat.

How has our food changed over the last 60 years? Science is increasingly concluding that it’s due to what they call Ultra Processed Food (UPF), which now constitutes a large proportion of what we eat because it’s cheap, easy to eat too much of and widely available.

There’s an excellent recent article from the Guardian that sums up current understanding – to read it follow this Link on our website to read some more about UPF.

Can we at The Old Saw Mill do anything to help?

We’ve looked at what’s on our menu, looking closely at the ingredients on the packaging, looking for ‘ingredients you wouldn’t have on the shelf at home’. The most regular UPF items we use are our breads, baps and tea cakes. So, from 1st June we are going to make our own using non UPF ingredients of course! Needless to say, what you eat with us is a tiny part of the food you eat but we believe we owe it to our customers to provide the healthiest food we possibly can.

We’ll continue looking at the ingredients we use and weed out the UPFs, but we pride ourselves in giving the best possible healthy food that we can. And just because food is vegan or vegetarian is no guarantee that it’s not UPF, read the list of ingredients and see if they are all things you could have on the shelf.

Of course, our weekly OSM Lunch Club meals are as far away from UPF foods as it’s possible to be, we want to be able to say that for all the food we provide, by 1st September we shall, that’s a promise.
